When it comes to composting, there are a lot of questions that pop up. Can you compost meat? Can you compost dairy? Can you compost paper towels? But one question that always seems to stump people is whether or not you can compost styrofoam. The short answer? No, you cannot compost styrofoam. But let's take a closer look at why.

The Problem with Styrofoam

The process involves growing mycelium (the vegetative part of a fungus) around agricultural waste, which forms a strong, lightweight material that can be molded into any shape. Plus, it's completely biodegradable!
Bioplastics: Bioplastics are made from renewable resources like corn starch, sugarcane, or potato starch. They are designed to break down easily in composting conditions and do not release harmful chemicals into the environment.

What to Do with Styrofoam Instead

So, if you can't compost styrofoam, what should you do with it? Here are some options:

Recycle: Some municipalities have special recycling programs for styrofoam. Check with your local waste management authority to see if this is an option in your area.
Reuse: If you receive a package with styrofoam, consider saving it for future use. Styrofoam can be used for crafts, as a cushion for delicate items during storage or shipping, or even as insulation in your home.
Landfill: Unfortunately, if you don't have access to recycling or reuse options, the only other option is to send it to the landfill. However, try to minimize your use of styrofoam as much as possible to reduce your environmental impact.

Composting is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and give back to the earth. However, not everything can be composted, and styrofoam is definitely one of those things. Instead, opt for more environmentally friendly packaging materials like paper, mushroom packaging, or bioplastics.
